Aloha everyone! I was just wondering what everyone thought of Dolphin Tale for those of you here who have seen this wonderfully awesome movie. I've seen it four times going on five and I love it! It's an incredibly inspiring movie that families of any size will enjoy! And the best part is they used the real Winter for it! Winter is adorable and cute beyond words!
Sawyer Nelson is an eleven-year-old boy who is just floating through life. He failed school, which landed him in summer school. What makes matters worse; he is losing the only person closely resembling a father to the army. His cousin Kyle is leaving in a few days for service and Sawyer is convinced he won’t return, just like his Dad who left the family five years ago. Before Kyle leaves, he gives Sawyer a gift and explains he will be back soon.
Sawyer doesn’t seem to have an interest in anything except for fixing up an old helicopter his absentee Dad left him in his old workshop.
That all changes when he’s riding to school one day and is stopped by a fishermen to help aid an injured bottlenose dolphin washed up on the shore. The fisherman asks Sawyer if he has a cell phone and the boy gives it to him. He then ventures into the waist high deep water and uses the knife his cousin, Kyle, gave him to set the dolphin free from the crab trap she is tangled up in. After assuring her he means no harm, Sawyer gets to work and quickly gets the ropes off of her. A rescue crew from Clear Water Marine Aquarium soon arrives and whisks the injured dolphin off to a marine hospital for treatment. Before leaving, Sawyer is introduced to Hazel, the head marine doctor’s young daughter. Hazel compliments him on his work setting the dolphin free. The next day, Sawyer skips school the next day to go check on the dolphin. When he gets to the aquarium, he encounters Rufus, a bird who thinks he owns the place! Once he gets passed the guard bird, he is reacquainted with Hazel and the two talk a little bit. Hazel informs him that the dolphin, who she named Winter is doing badly, but he can see her if he likes. She explains that two other dolphins she named Autumn and Summer were released back into the ocean shortly after recovering from their injuries. Hazel leads Sawyer to Winter’s pool, even though her father doesn’t like victors near the sick animals. She introduces Sawyer to Winter’s new trainer, Phoebe, who reluctantly greets him pleasantly while reminding Hazel of her father’s rule about visitors. Phoebe then explains that Winter isn’t doing well at all. Then as though sensing Sawyer’s presence, Winter lifts her head and makes a sound equivalent to Tweedy bird that she seems to only make for Sawyer! Hazel takes this as a good sign as does Phoebe. Sawyer has to leave when Hazel’s father enters, but promises he’ll be back. He does come back several more times and is welcomed with open arms by Hazel’s father after his unauthorized visit and of course open fins by Winter.
The movie teaches a lot of valuable lessons such as never giving up, persevering against the odds and sticking with family. I highly recommend it to everyone!
